The Castell de Santa Florentina is built on an old house from Roman times: "Domus", which was an urban nucleus and a wine-producing area. In the 11th century the building became a fortified farmhouse (Casa Forta) to combat the pirate raids of the time and today it is still present in the architectural complex of the Castle.

 

It will be in the fourteenth century under the patronage of Ferrer de Canet, noble knight, advisor to King Alfonso the Magnanimous and ambassador of Pere el Cerimoniós, when the Domus will reach its maximum splendor.

 

At the end of the 19th century, Ramon de Montaner i Vila, owner of the Domus and important businessman in the Barcelona publishing world with the Montaner i Simón publishing house (today the headquarters of the Antoni Tàpies Foundation), commissioned his nephew Lluís Domènech i Montaner to restore the Domus and its extension.

 

Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the greatest exponents of Catalan Modernism, designed one by one the 3,000 habitable square meters of Santa Florentina. With his team made up of the best artists and craftsmen of the time, he introduced stained glass windows colored with religious symbols, large pieces of marble with mosaics for floors, carved woods, stained glass, ceramics, wrought iron and sculptures that harmonize a balanced space full of color. light, shapes and volumes.

 

The final project is defined as a palace residence with medieval and romantic castle touches, in harmony with an aesthetic and creative modernist language. This reform inspired by medieval, modernist and neo-Gothic elements gave Castell de Santa Florentina greater renown.
